I am a novice at rod building, but my first project is this rod repair. My friend's puppy got at one of his rods and destroyed the butt end and reel seat. He was going to toss it but I said I wanted it. Total length of the handle section (front of foregrip to end of butt) is 8 inches. Well after removing all the cork and reel seat, I had to cut off about 2 inches because of the fraying. So I was thinking about inserting a wooden dowel inside of the blank, to compensate for this 2 inch loss. I was just curious how far into the blank do I need to insert this dowel so that it would be a sturdier rod at the butt end, 1 inch or more? The desired end result is that this wood dowel would compensate the loss of 2 inches and be full EVA after the reel seat. Maybe this is repair is a waste of time? I am also open to other ideas on how to repair this rod. Thank you in advance. Re: Rod repair from butt end

Goe,
Simplify your life. Cutting 2 inches off of the end of the rod butt is not a big deal. In fact, for most rods it will be a non issue. Yes, if you want to extend it back by 2 inches you can just take another section of scrapped rod blank and after cutting the blank at the correct location to fit inside the butt of the rod, glue up the end, insert it, clean up the glue and then trim the length to the length you want. Then, whether you have extended the butt section or not, just use masking tape or something else to make the size of the rod uniform from but butt of the butt rod to the front of where the fore grip will be located, if you are also replacing the fore grip. Then, apply glue to the blank to the inside of the fore grip reel seat and rear grip and slip everything together and clean up the excess epoxy glue and you will be good to go after gluing on a butt cap on the butt of the rear grip. Good luck Re: Rod repair from butt end
