Can anybody tell me the pros and cons about the use of a tack cloth and best way to use them? Re: Tack cloth

I know of no cons, but they work well for me, just a light brush with them, don't "scrub" with them. Good question-I look forward to other responses. Re: Tack cloth

Fernando,
Rather than using a tack cloth which I expects works well, I use low tack masking tape. Here it is the blue tape that is low tack. [www.homedepot.com] I just use the blue masking tape to tack off all of the thread wraps before coating to be sure that there is no dust on the wraps to spoil the finish. Good luck Re: Tack cloth

I’ve had no problems with a tack cloth. I use it to get rid of dust from cork and other things. I also use a paper towel moistened with alcohol, it also works very well.

Fernando,
In the composite industry, the use of a tack-rag is a big no-no! I do not know as to exactly why but I conformed as I am not qualified to question. If I remember correctly, epoxies were much more susceptible to the ill effects as compared to polyesters (FG resin) and vinylesters. However, I employ tack-rags when painting with most oil or water based products. The key is an extremely light touch as stated above. As Roger stated, a light touch with masking tape (low-tack preferred) is the method I use just prior to applying thread epoxy. I just knock the dust off with a few strokes of a soft brush. Re: Tack cloth

Spencer,
I have tried the use of a soft brush and the problem is that after a bit, the brush gets full of dust, is next to impossible to clean and end up putting dust back on the rod rather than removing it. That is the reason that I use low tack masking tape because the tape is always fresh with no contaminants on it when it comes off the roll. This is essentially the same principle of the masking tape rollers that are used to clean lint from clothing. When the tape gets filled with lint, the outer layer of tape is removed and a clean layer of tape is exposed to continue delinting the clothing. Same technique, except that I use pieces of fresh low tack masking tape to tack off the dust from wraps prior to coating. Good luck Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
