Large DC motor and taig head stock for turning grips

Here is a view of a large (1/3rd hp) 120V DC motor connected to a Taig head stock and Taig chuck.

The DC motor is a 120 DC motor of about 1/3rd hp. The speed can be varied from 0-3000 rpm by changing the voltage on the DC power supply.
The DC power supply was constructed using an AC variac followed by a full bridge rectifier and a smoothing capacitor.
The motor is connected to the Taig head stock using an XL cogged belts driving XL 50 cm cogged pulleys.
The unit is constructed on 4 inch wide 1/8th aluminum that matches the base of my power wrapper.

I ran across the DC motor at a surplus store for a very reasonable price.

Notice that the Taig head stock and chuck are similar to the improved Alps chuck of today as well as the Clemens wrappers of yesterday. The Taig chuck is essentially the same chuck that is on the Clemens and the Renzetti power wrappers.

Best wishes.

Nice Roger. Have had a look at Taig here in Australia and it is pretty pricey. They do look like good quality stuff.

What was the cost for that set-up? That set-up looks durable and fairly straight forward simplicity.

The TAIG parts are precision mini lathe parts, hence the expense. I CPW with the original TAIG parts is still a nice setup after around 30 years of use.

Roger,
As always, nice job Roger; I have learned to not expect anything less from you. What is the spindle bore of the Taig headstock and chuck? I would consider 1in ID to be the minimum acceptable ID for my purposes. Although not needed nearly as often as a three-jaw chuck, do they offer a directly interchangeable four-jaw chuck as well? How expensive are their units?

Mark,

The head stock is the ER-16. The od of the chuck mounting shaft is 3/4 inch. So, the id of the head stock is about 1/2 inch or a bit less.
