Distance of the choke guide

I will be building a 7'2" rod for baitcasting. My baitcasting reel is Daiwa Zillion with 10lbs mono. My question is how do I calculate the choke guide distance. Is it the same way as spinning reel? If so, which measurement of the reel spool do I read from? The horizontal side (where the line guide is moving) or side plate diameter? I can't find any video or article using NGC with baitcasting reel. My guide train is RV6 > KB5 > KT5

Thanks for any advice.

Regards,

Johnny

There is no "choke" guide on a bait casting rod.

Hi Tom,

Cool! That solve my issue.

Thanks,

One might, however, wonder how the distance from the reel to the first guide is determined.

I set it at 20 inches and then check the line flow and modify it if necessary.

The RV6 was created as the stripper for a KR Concept casting set-up. It is equal in height to a KW10. In the majority of cases, with "average" reels, the RV will work best at around 19-20 inches from the pawl guide on the reel.

Jim, I'd try the RV if it came in Polished Alconite like the KW guides I use. But the KW10 works great so no big deal. The larger diameter of the 10 is probably better anyway since I simple-spiral my casting guides to the bottom.

I think a KW8 would be closer in height to an RV6 than a KW10. Am I missing something here?

Yes, it’s the distance off the blank not the total height of the guide.
