Fly rod fighting butt

All, any reason to terminate a 1.5” +/- butt on a saltwater fly rod with eva versus composite cork vs something else?

Many thanks for any ideas, David

You can have all cork, I look for a tougher composite cork on the very end as regular cork can chip. Full EVA, or a mix of cork with EVA end, they all work well.

Here is a video on how we do it with our foam butt disc and cork rings.

This is what I do mostly. I just don't like the way foam and cork look together on a fly rod so I use composite corks and they are very tough. I also do it with my other than fly rod builds (OTFR), has held up well over the years. Burl type cork is good but the rubberized cork composites, that are a little heavy, offer the best strength even with a thinner ring. Now graphite grips/butts and EVA look pretty good together.

You can also use a Korkalon color EVA with cork to reduce the dramatic change in contrast without the composite cork weight if you like.

Thanks everyone. I agree with a lot of the posters above about not liking the cork and EVA look, was curious to know benefits and detriments of the EVA vs the Composite cork terminal ring. It sounds like a trade off in weight between the EVA disc and a composite disc vs the look.

In relation to composite cork, are their any brands or manufacturers who are better in terms of being able to work the material, color choice etc.

I alternate between black EVA and Rhino rubberized cork. The EVA is a little lighter - but that close to the butt it doesn't matter much.
The Rhino is more durable. But unless you are really rough on your stuff it won't matter.
