In order to use the KR Concept calculator I need to know the size reel I plan to use. How do I choose a reel size to match a blank? Are there some guidelines to use for primers to match a reel to blank: rod length, weight, power, action, etc; reel weight?

I need a reel for a St Croix 7'6" SCIV HF rod rated for lures 3/4-1.5oz. This rod will be used to throw soft plastic lures for pargos and snappers, etc along Mexico coastline. I would like to use my Daiwa Saltist 4500 but I am assuming it is too large. So where do I go from there?

I'm not familiar with the Saltist you mention, but if it's close to a Shimano Stradic 4000, it's probably right on. I have an old Daiwa called a 3500 that is bigger than a Stradic 4000, so I'm not sure. As important as the blank, IMHO, is the line you plan to use.. That will dirve the guide and reel decisions. With the lures you plan to use, I think I would use braid of about 20-25 and a reduction train of 25h, 12h, and a 7m, runners probably 6. And a reel about the size of the Shimano 4000. Your Salitst may be just fine.

The Stradic 4000 weighs 10oz the Saltist 4500 weighs 22oz. I assume that is a critical difference suggesting the saltist is too big

Yes, for an inshore spinner that is 7'6 in length a 22 oz reel is a beast for sure . Spinning reels that weigh in the range of 18 oz - 22 oz balance the best with rods 10 feet to 12 feet in length. With rods under 8 feet look for reels in the 8 oz to 15 oz range for great balance .

I don't know of any primers to know what reel size will match well with what blank, ( Talking about a very balanced feeling setup ) i only go on past experience with different reels and blank lengths . You must know what line type , size and how many yards you plan to spool up before deciding on other factors . Knowing that will not only tell you what rod to look for but what reel as well .

Since you already have the rod and know it's ratings choose a reel that will hold the amount of line you want of the pound test you plan on using , you also should know the drag range to be able to control the fish you plan on fishing for , anything from 15 lbs to 25 lbs of drag is plenty for all but the most powerful surf caught fish .

Look closely at the overall weight in ounces of the reel , for a 7'6 rod you want something that is lighter than 22 oz , something in the 14 to 18 ounce range should offer more than enough line capacity and drag pressure & that would be the heaviest reel i would consider especially if you plan on carrying it while casting repeatedly .

KR has its limits. If you want to use the reel I would suggest you default back to NGC. Or buy a new reel. If you insist on experimenting, or agree to use light line, use a 25, 12, 6L.
