Ok guys and gals,
My dad picked up a used 5' 10" rod blank at a fishing outlet. I want to refurbish this blank. So, Im looking for advice. Everything has been stripped off except for the butt cap, which I took off. Some of the cork from the handle is still on and a couple of thread wraps are left. So any tips or advice on how to get adhesive, epoxy, cork, etc off would be great. Quite frankly any advice would help. Also, parts of the blank have like flakes of the clear coat coming off. Is that going to affect the blank at all? And do I, or should I, need to do anything to fix it. Plus, if you any ideas for covering up old scuffs would be great. Thanks ahead of time for any advice or tips, Its greatly appreciated. I always use a hair dryer and a Popsicle stick and my thumbnail to remove guide wrap remains. Sometimes the blank finish needs to be removed if you are relocating the guide train, or if the finish is damaged. In that case I use Citrus Strip to take it down to bare graphite. I also use the Popsicle stick for help with that. Sometimes it takes two applications. Many top of the line blanks are bare graphite.
When the finish is gone, wipe the blank down with alcohol. I've never had a problem using denatured alcohol for that, and I have refinished dozens of rods. In this picture you can see where I removed the finish on a blank. [www.rodbuilding.org] I always wax my rods with Meguiars Carnauba wax when done wrapping. _________________________________________ "Angling is extremely time consuming. Brandon,
Pretty easy with a heat gun and a single edged razor blade held vertically to scrape any residue of anything off of the blank. Heat the blank enough to soften the residue, without getting the blank hot enough to cause any damage and scrape away. It is just a few minute job using this method. Good luck Re: Rod Refurbishing Help

Just be careful.. Dont get into the graphite.. As for the cork, use the remains as a arbor, reem the new cork to seat onto the old.. If your not going to be covering that area back up completely, 320, 600, 2000 grit wet sand.. Gently... Again., dont get into the graphite.. Pick up some permagloss.. Ask us about application before going to town, theres a trick to it as it sets up fast... I wet sand the clear coat when it gets all flakey.. Easier then scraping.. As for hiding small scratchs, again lermagloss.. Again, email me.. Ill gradly help you Re: Rod Refurbishing Help
