The need for me to know the exact thread wraps per inch (TWPI) for size A and D rod wrapping thread arose the other day. I could not find any information on TWPI which was necessary for me to calculate the starting point of a fade guide wrap so that the end of the wrap was exactly at the guide upright legs. We all know how 1 or 2 fewer or additional threads can though-off the balance of a wrap. I realize many of you may not have the need to know; I didn’t until now. I also realize there are many variables involved including brand of thread, thread tension, how tightly the wrap is packed, and other considerations. With that being said, consider the following to be simply a starting point for determining the actual TWPI for your own application. I would guess all the major brands of thread are pretty dang close in OD, although ProWrap NCP is the only thread measured here. Why? Simply because that is what I use and do not have other brands on hand to test/measure. For comparative aspects, I tend to wrap with moderate-to-moderate-heavy tension and attempt to pack each thread per rotation of the blank.
Size A thread = 114 TWPI Size D thread = 78TWPI Since I was in need of this information yet could not find it elsewhere, I have afforded it here in hopes of helping others who have helped me so much. While it may seem trivial, it could be a huge benefit in certain circumstances. I invite others to post discrepancies in my findings to ultimately benefit the masses, myself included.
