Just finished building a slow pitch spinning rod. Tip top fuji mnat8(6.5).glued it on , wrapped the tenon w thread then two coats of epoxy along with the guides. Realized afterwards that the tip of rod was 2.13mm (manufacturers specs)and that I should've used a smaller tube size such as 8(6). It certainly seems secure but now I'm wondering if I should get the appropriate top or not even fret this ? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I never trust factory specs, manufacturing processes used in rod building can cause a tip to be smaller, or larger than the blank they tested for the catalog. If I'm using a guide type I don't usually carry a lot of I have the blank seller size the tip top.
If it didn't feel sloppy when you installed it you're probably fine.

Particularly with fine tipped rods, it is sometimes a problem to find tips that have small enough tubes.

So, I get the one that is nearest to what I want. Then, if the tube is too large, I will put on one, two or three wraps of thread to enlarge the tip of the rod blank. Then, glue it on and it is just fine.

Good pointers and thank you both for the comments! I should have known when I put the tip top on initially that it was too big but didn't give it much thought. Likely, a lack of experience. It was only after the build was complete that I realized the specs I was referencing was the heavier version of the rod with a rod tip of 2.40mm (my rod has a tip of 2.13mm). So that is why I had ordered the 8(6.5) tip top rather than the small size. Still debating whether to let it be or strip it and put on the appropriate size tip. If not sized appropriately , wondering how likely it is to fail , especially if hauling on some big fish.

And Roger, what you said is what I should have done in the first place with how loose it was.

It only takes a few minutes to heat the tip, pull it off, clean up the tip, wrap with thread, recoat with adhesive and put the tip back on the rod. Maybe 30 minutes total.

I have a saying i go by for just about everything... If you stare at something for longer then 5 minutes wondering if you fix, or redo, or correct something... Just do it..

If its bothering you, replace it... Heck i just spent 6 hours doing a really nice weave... It looked really good.. But didnt fit the rod right... And i cant tell you what it was that bothered me.. So.. I removed it.. Lol

If anything.. Its worth the experience, and practice..

You guys are dead on. Easy redo. Going to pick up the appropriate size top. Just the fact that I'm sitting here knowing it wasnt done right bothers me. An effective learning experience and I feel better already lol. I appreciate the help. Mark

In the future if you cannot get the supplier to size the tip to the blank order the size it should be then half size above and below. Try them and see what the best fit is. Very few of us have a local supplier for rod supplies so we have to order everything. For the few extra bucks I would rather have extra tips than have to place another order.
