Hi, I want to build a fly rod in 4wt, I have to choose a blank, I've seen mhx 8', mhx native 7'9", cts affinity mx 8', revelation 7'9".
Finally I bought a MHX 8' 4wt, I want to use the MHX spacing to put guides on, so 9 guides, I want to use single foot guides, anyone can say a good guide sizing set. Thanks Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 01/17/2019 07:44PM by Stefano Plebani. Re: Fly rod 8' 4wt

You selection of rod weight and length suggest you have considered the species and the waters you will be fishing. Blank choice from there depends a lot upon individual taste, individual casting proficiency, line choice, and fly choice: moderate action, fast action, dry flies, streamers, nymphs sink tip line, floating line, 40' casts, 70' casts . . . Although any rod blank can perform all these tasks no one blank can perform them equally well. That makes your question difficult to answer. Re: Fly rod 8' 4wt

At that length and line weight I would also check out fly rod blanks made of S glass fiberglass. The Steffen 8’ 3/4 is a very sought out but also CTS Quartz which I handled at the ICRBE that felt great. Another blank that is made in the USA that has received great reviews is Livingston fly rods. Traditional snake guide layout would be 2/0,2/0,1/0,1/0,1,1,2,2,3 with light wire snakes then a 9mm metal stripper or 10mm ceramic stripper guide. You could also make it non traditional to make the tip a touch lighter weight by using 1 additional 2/0 and 1/0 and cut down on the 1 and 2 size. Re: Fly rod MHX 8' 4wt guide sizing

10, 3, and your choice of 1/0 or 2/0 the rest of the way out. I would also use lite wire snakes Ron Weber Re: Fly rod MHX 8' 4wt guide sizing

10mm is the O.D. of the ceramic insert. Re: Fly rod MHX 8' 4wt guide sizing

Ok, but the od is 10 but id may vary, I want to use pacbay single foot to make a lightweight rod, and a pacbay series n stripping guide, so id is 6.8mm is good? Re: Fly rod MHX 8' 4wt guide sizing

Don’t use only Fuji guides, you’ll kill the rod.
Use light guides (Fuji as stripper is fine). Just my 2 cents. Re: Fly rod MHX 8' 4wt guide sizing

Skip the single foot 5 and 4 (use more 1 instead of)
For this blank you can do 10 (stripper) 3 - 2- 1 - then 1/0 thrue tip. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
