Surf Rod for the Northern Oregon Coast

Hello all,
I found a stash of blanks squirreled away in my Grandfather's stuff, and one of those blanks was a Seeker SU 100L 10 foot 2 piece rod. It seems that this blank is labeled as Medium Light 2-4 OZ 12-20 Surf Blank. I want to tie this into a beach rod for Surf Perch, and am looking for some advice on guide type, spacing and handle materialn It will be paired with an Akios 651 Shuttle conventional reel and casting 2-3 ounces.
What are your guys' thoughts on a build like this?
Advice is much appreciated.
Thank you,

-Derick

Talked to an uncle that has a Seeker surf rod, but it's a medium. He gave me his spacing and guide sizes: From the butt, it has a 20, 16, 12, than 10's to the tip. Spacing from the tip: 4, 8 1/2, 13 3/8, 19 3/8, 27 1/2, 36 1/2, 46 7/8, and 59 1/2 inches. Never seen, or know anyone who has used your reel. Within reason it's not that important I don't think.

I only mentioned the reel as it sits closer to the blank than a standard round reel. Is his tied as a casting or spin rod?

Casting, if spinning the guides would be much larger near the reel and progress faster to the smallest guides, back than there would have been at least one less if not two less guides also.

No previous experience with that particular blank but thats fine because it's not necessary for people to be ultimately familiar with that specific blank , you provided whats needed for people to give you recommendations with the specs . A ten footer rated ML with a 2-4 oz lure range . Pretty standard surf rod specs not difficult at all . Handle spacing is dependent on your comfort and personal preferences .

Many people like the Winn grips including myself which i prefer the overwraps for the handles on my surf rods , decided to try them out and have been exceptionally pleased with them , you can also go with cork tape , a shrink wrap grip , split grip , EVA foam grip and even a full cork grip but those are extremely rare on the extra long handles on surf rods . Guides can be from Fuji , American Tackle , Batson/Rainshadows superb "Alps" lineup , Pacific Bay , Sea Guide etc... it's a custom build so everything is up to you and what you prefer.

Just look for casting guides from the different manufacturers , the size of the guides will be up to you since line type and pound test you intend to use has a lot to do with guide choices and sizes . If you want a system that is exceptionally easy to set up and works exceptionally well with no guess work involved look at the American Tackle Microwave systems as they have spinning and casting sets meaning everything is already chosen for you including the sizes & where they're positioned , you just follow their specific method , most everybody raves about the performance of American Tackles Microwave system.

Those guides seem pretty gimmicky, i'll keep researching them though.
How heavy are those grips compared to EVAs or cord? Im half tempted to run a thin eva ramp into the reel seat and something similar on the butt them covering the whole butt including ramps in heat shrink. I want somthing light and durabile.

I think Herb was talking about the Winn grip rod overwrap. It is very light, I had a friend use it and he liked it a lot. Makes nice tacky non slip grip even when wet. Shrink tape will also work as will cork tape. With all of these, when they have seen their last days, they are easy to replace. I really like the Fuji K guides. You can get then in a corrosion control frame, that really hold up in saltwater and are much less expensive than titanium frames.

K guides ordered, now deciding on butt length and reel seat. I currently have an older fuji trigger grip, but I am not sure if I want a trigger. I currently have a Penn Prevail 10ft and like the butt length alot but I had a local rod builder doing his bet to talk me out of anything over 20 inches.

Well we already know you're pairing this rod with a Akios 651 so get a feel where you want it positioned on the blank by going through the casting motions and then measure the diameter of the blank at the spot where you want the reel and order a reel seat that will fit well , the handle length will fall into place by itself at the time when everything feels just right and you know where the reel should be positioned from experimenting .
