Blank suggestions for an (overly specific) 3 wt fly rod

Hello everybody. I'm planning to build my second fly rod, a 3 wt for a friend. He wants something fast and compact. I don't think it needs to be uber fast, but more responsive than his current moderate. He has a 6 piece that he adores, but I warned him that we may need to go with a shorter 4 piece to expand our blank options. It's a University of Wyoming themed rod, so I'm trying to find something that I can match to their brown, gold, and cream color scheme. Like last time I'm totally overwhelmed searching for appropriate blanks. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Thanks everybody in advance for your help and advice.

P.S., I'm trying to stick to his $200 budget with this rod. In the spirit of Christmas I'm not too worried about overextending myself just a hair.

I picked up a couple of TFO 7’3” 3 wt. 4 pc blanks from a Mudhole just before Thanksgiving. They are a deep gold brown color. I don’t know if they still have any or if any other supplier does.

The Bingham Bing SHX blanks are a nice option, both in performance and price. Nice looking blanks also.

Taylor,
Unfortunately a CTS MAY be out of price range.
I got some prices for another person from this site. A 9'0", 6 pieces, #4 was $272.
Which really is not that bad - if you think of it.

Taylor,
Pick up a Cabela's Stowaway 8'6" 3 weight rod for $150.
Strip the wraps and finish per the required theme.
Don't personally like 6-piece rods. Too many flat spots and way too slow an action. Casting a dish rag is more enjoyable.
Your budget doesn't allow for many options or for a quality blank.
If he prefers 6-piece blanks he probably won't notice the difference.
This still doesn't leave a lot on the table for your efforts.

Check out Mudhole's site, they usually put their fly rod blanks on sale right now (along with other types). Good blanks that I have built a couple 3wts on. The ones I used were MHX 9' 4 pc and I did not pay over $40 for either. Very easy to get your rod made under budget. Those 6 pc travel rod blanks may be hard to find.

Check out Ye Olde English fly shop in Florida . Brian is a great guy and has some nice blanks . I have his 7'9" 4pc 3wt and it's a good little rod .
Also Matt @ proof sells some nice blanks .
