Almost finished with my first rebuild on an 8ft surf rod. I’m wondering if anyone has ever made epoxy ramps onto heat shrink tubing. I have a section where I used 2 different sizes of tubing and there is a very small gap. Also a section where the rod butt cap meets the tubing and at the front grip where the tubing didn’t shrink as much as I hoped it would. I would post some pics but I can’t figure out how. I’m open to any suggestions, this is my first build.

My first build went the same way and i was thinking exactly like you and was determined to fix anything that wasn't how i thought it should be which was essentially the entire project . I should of left it alone because my attempts to make it look better made it worse and by the end of the evening i was about to heave everything out the window and take up bowling instead .

OK i feel a little better now , now on to your question , yes many are very experienced in epoxy ramps and i'm sure one will chime in soon , congrats on your first build.

Are the guides on the blank? Ramp solutions depend on whether on or not.

Pics will help. Go to photo page by clicking "photos" above. Click on the category selection button for "Grips" etc. Browse your computer for the photo files you want to upload. Assign a title, add a comment, then hit the upload/submit button at the bottom. Will work best if you resize the huge files that phones often yield. Smaller files will upload faster and will give decent quality images.

Rather than use an epoxy ramp - if you really want to cover the gap, just do a thread wrap and then a standard coating with thread coating epoxy.

I have not had good luck with ramps over tubing, but no issues at all with a thread wrap and then a thread coating over tubing.

Or, as Herb suggested, you may be better off just using it as is.

some have been making ramps from epoxy putty and forming it right on the blank and smoothing it down to suit and then coating with finish no gaps no fuss no muss

Yes you can use epoxy putty from HW store, but epoxy putty is fairly heavy.

I'm kind of partial to forming the ramp out of foam, then covering with a light thread wrap, and then applying epoxy over the thread.
