Newbie but have been building for a while . Do you think it is necessary to under wrap guides? Is it better for the guide to sit on the thread instead of the blank?

Alex

I do not think it is necessary to under wrap the guides. Other than being decorative I do not see any added benefit to the construction. However there are always exceptions and there may be a situation which warrants an under wrap. I never had a situation that required an under wrap so my experience is that an under wrap is not necessary.

Have fun

John

Absolutely not to both questions. In my opinion underwraps do two things, they add additional weight and they negatively effect sensitivity. Anytime you have something thats relatively soft in between the guide and the blank will effect sensitivity , some think it's minor but i don't.

Heavy salt trolling and surf may benefit from using an underwrap. Not so much most other type rods.

Use underwraps where there will be a lot of pressure put on the double foot guides like on a tuna / blue water rod, when sensitivity is not an issue.
