I’ve been out of the loop for a couple of years and haven’t had to buy any thread in the post-Gudebrod era. So, what’s the general consensus on what’s a good substitute?

Not aware of a consensus, lots of opinions. Many use Pro-wrap, which I find less than suitable. The new Hitena threads work pretty well, they have more stretch built in.

I'm still working off a pretty good inventory of Gudebrod, so do not need a substitute yet.

Pro Wrap. You can't beat the color selection.

Pro Wrap regular thread is fine, their metallic is very hard to manage. But they have a metallic black which I really like for its really black color and the fact that it holds well in nail knots for trim. The Fuji polyester ultra threads are very good, have not tried their or Pro Wrap's color fast threads (No CP).. I'm not fond of the Fishhawk thread, seems like a sort of coarse twist, but have made a couple good builds with it when I needed a color others didn't have.

You will get many opinions. Best to try a spool of all of them.

Thanks much for all the answers so far. I should point out that I don’t generally use NCP thread, metallic thread, or variegated thread, so just looking for something equivalent to the Gudebrod solid colors.

Although I have, and have used a good amount of Pro Wrap, I prefer the Fuji thread when color choice is not a factor!

I'm really liking the Hitena thread for its stretch characteristics, lack of "fuzzies", color consistency and ease of packing. IMHO, better than the old gold standard of Gudebrod.
