When a company says a blank is “unsanded” is it still usable that way or does it have to be sanded before you can build on it?I am a novice builder and came across some rods on mudhole that says they are unsanded and wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Re: Unsanded rod

Josh,,
It still has the subtle spiral rings produced by the wrapping before baking blank. Some people like the way it looks. It adds weight and does not measurably improve durability. Basically it looks like a rat-tail file. Herb Re: Unsanded rod

You've probably seen many rods left unhanded and didn't realize what you were looking at. The question you want to ask is whether or not the blank has been finished. If so, then it will have the typical gloss appearance you're used to but will have find spiral ridges along its length. For many years, Orvis and Scott left their blanks finished, but unhanded, if that helps you get a mental image of what one looks like.
