Ladies/Gents
I am a newbie to this Site and to Rod Building in general. I do build some light Trolling (Span Mak's/Blues) Lures and maintain an army of Penn Fishing Reels. 95% of my fishing is near shore off a Jetski with the balance as surf/pier fishing... I have a 2 pc, 6 1/2' Blank - should be around the 10 - 15# Line weight. Has .371" Butt with a #6 Tip. I plan on using a Plate-type Reel Seat for a Penn 9 Reel. I already have the Seat mounted on a 1/2" PVC Pipe which will then be mounted to the Rod by the normal method of arbor/epoxy. Not pretty but functional - 130# Dacron HollowCore underwrap, black electrical shrink wrap over it, Reel Seat mounted on top with the same Dacron and Shrink Wrap. The center of the Seat is Shrink Wrap also. I have a Split Grip EVA Foam Handle kit ordered and will come Tuesday. As a test, I will try some slip-on (chineseium) Guides (spiral wrapped) epoxied/super glued in place. I am open to your thoughts, comments, and barbs... ;-) Thanks Steve Edited 1 time(s). Steve
I don't build the type rods you are building, so I've no build help for you. Nonetheless, welcome, and be warned that rod building is akin to eating potato chips - rarely can a fellow stop with just one. Re: Complete Newbie to Rod Building

Why would you go through all that @#$%& when you can slide on a reel seat, glue it and be done? Epoxied/super glued for guides? Just wrap them with thread. Flex Coat and Mudhole have videos how to build a rod, check them out. Re: Complete Newbie to Rod Building

Don
lolol.. (see my inventory of 30+ Reels) Alex I already had all the Parts. The Guides don't have a foot to wrap to. They slip on the Rod. Gluing would just make sure they stay put. Steve Re: Complete Newbie to Rod Building

UPDATE and some 'progress'...
Gents Second Rod is compete. The one (1st) with the Slipon Guides is butt ugly but might be functional. Looking forward to testing it. The 2nd is also complete. Reel Plate on top of a Paracord underwrap. First Guide is a Stripper then Snake Guides all wrapped and epoxied. Better looking. Giving it to a friend for testing. Interesting with this one is that with ~14oz of weight on this Rod, the Line follows the Blank exactly and was on the top of the Blank, not pivoting around the Guides as it would with Casting Guides. Started the 3rd. Again, Reel Plate/Paracord. Starting on the Guides. Still using the Snake Guides but will be doing a Spiral Wrap so eventually the Line will be hanging from the Guides.. Now... all these are intended for Penn 9's with various line wt's but nothing over 15# mono. They will be used to drift/drag bait. What are your opinions on the Snake Guides, Spiral Wrap, etc.? As always, thanks Steve Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
