Looking at getting a new dryer for my rods and I can't decide what one would be best to buy. I have a 40 rpm now and I want something a little slower and have the option of a 12 or 16 rpm motor. I'm using flex coat high build on my rods. Any help would be appreciated.

I would go to the 16 rpm motor. The 12 rpm can be the fall back if you still want to go slower. I use Original Flex coat and turn with a 10 rpm motor.

Another suggestion is to use a DC motor and try various speeds until you reach a speed that suits your needs.

I use 4 - 9 rpm drying motors, but it does not make a lot of difference. They all work, I just like slow speeds for drying, and fast speeds for applying.
John is correct in saying that a variable speed DC mother gives you the option of slowing down or speeding up, they are the best of two worlds. I have one that goes from 0 to 45 rpms. You can apply epoxy and dry using the same motor..

Go with the DC gear motor and variable speed so that you can go from 0- max rpm.

The viscosity of rod finishes is an unpublished mystery. Here in my garage in Florida I look for the thickest finish I can find for nine months out of the year, while I looked for the thinest finish I could find when building rods in my unheated basement in central New York State. Regardless, you should consider ambient temperature when selecting the epoxy you use .

18 RPM is the general all-around drying speed. Works very well with all the various finishes and different viscosities. So 16 should be fine.
