Agree. It's not that hard. Build 1, then you know. Build 10 and you're good at it. Build 100 and you're a professional.

But seriously, it isn't difficult.

I'm between 10 and 100 for what it's worth.

You don't need a "school"

The Threadwork, handle-building, alignment and spacing the components of rod building are the easiest aspects to master. Selecting the proper blank to accommodate the desires of the recipient is much more difficult, if not down-right daunting. It is truly unfortunate if not a down-right shame the entire industry has not (did not) immediately adopted Dr. Hannerman’s gracious gift of CCS, AA and CCF to precisely depict the characteristics of each and every rod or blank. God bless Dr. Hannerman!!!

Murray, the answer to your question is, yes there are lots of classes in various Canadian cities where you can learn rod building - I just did a simple Internet search for 'fly rod building classes in Canada' and lots showed up!
As Mark and others note the physical construction of a rod is fairly easy and you can certainly learn on your own (books, internet)
BUT, you can develop some bad (or at least inefficient) habits in the process.
Learning in a class environment allows you to experience everyone else's problems and successes and helps center your thinking.
One caution - there is no one specific way to build rods! Each instructor will have and teach their technique but also provide tricks and tips that they have developed over the years.

I took the Mudhole class that Todd is talking about this past spring in Minneapolis. Well worth and and highly recommended. I’m sure I could have figured it out using YouTube, but it was so nice talking to guys that make their living at it. When your building and you run I to a snag, these guys can show you their techniques to make the rod building process smoother, more enjoyable, and headache free while putting out a better product.
