Soon to order components for a 15kg stroker type rod. Having a look at similar type rods I have they seem to use a 12mm ring for the tip top but the last running guide is a 10mm.Is there a benifit to doing this or is having a 10mm for the tip top ok.Also is there a need for a larger tip top on other rods.I think the benifit may be in getting knots through the tip without catching.As I only ever run a plaited double to a snap swivel it may not matter.Any help or advice much appreciated.

Many times a 12 is at the tip because they don't make a 10 tip with a big enough tube size for the blank's heavy tip.

If the knot went through 10's on the way out, you don't need a 12 tiptop to clear it. The tiptop needn't be any larger than your smallest running guide.

Sometimes you see odd things with tiptops as builders have to juggle available tiptop ring sizes with the tube sizes they're available in.

There is an alternative - use a standard low frame casting guide and bend the single foot around and underneath the blank tip. This forms a great heavy duty tiptop. Photos were in a past issue of RodMaker. It's something that Ken Preston used to do on his surf rods.
