I'm new to this! I'm going to start putting new guides, on a couple rods. What is the difference in thread sizes? Is one easier to work with, or stronger, I just don't know.

Simply put, for the vast majority of fresh water guides, thread size A is the go to thread used by virtually all of the rod builders.

But, when going to very heavy salt water rods, folks will go to size D or C thread.

Certainly when starting, the larger D sized thread is much easier to work with and does a nice job. But the much thinner A sized thread give a nice smooth finish that is not matched by the larger D sized thread.

Another thing, if you want to do an underwrap to place your guides on, it works much better if the two threads are not the same size. If they are the same size, than the grooves between the threads make laying and packing the second wrap harder. By going to an A thread on the bottom and a larger thread such as D on top everything is staggered as far as spacing and it will lay down much easier.
As far as strength, D thead is stronger, but there are less turns per wrap, so in the scheme of things to me, there is no real strength/durability difference.

This will help! I have been taking notes and making lists to try and order all I need At one shot for shipping cost. Since i'm starting out replacing guides and hook holders. How do I figure out the size guides i'll need ( I'm thinking measure the inside diameter ) is that right?

Size B is another choice for thread size looks good and is easier to wrap than A , but not as easy as D. Guide size is measured by the OD of the ring not the ID, and it is in mm.

You do not mention the type or size of the rod, which can make a difference in thread choice!

Thread sizes are, A, B, C & D, thinner to thicker. As mentioned above size A is the usual go to for most fresh water and lighter saltwater rods. Selection of the thread is influenced by the type of rod, with the rod diameter being a big factor.

WOW glad I decided to research rod building before doing it!! Their is a lot to take in. I appreciate all the help from you seasoned builders! I'll continue to take notes, so if anyone wants to add any information please do so. And the first rod that I will want to build is a, medium light saltwater 7' to 7 1/2' spinning rod. To fish the inlet and bays for flounder/fluke. guess i'd be casting up to 2 oz. Guess I should make a topic on all the components of a rod, As well as other places on the internet. Again I thank you all for your help!

Get different sizes to see how they work, the color don't matter, as all you want, is to see how it works on a double wrap, just get 2 colors , Larger size over smaller ,
