Glue Gun Glue

Is the glue stick used in a cheap glue gun the same as what we use to attach tip tops? Just curious. I have a glue gun and glue sticks.

There are different grades of hot melt glues. Most of the stuff sold in hobby shops melts at lower temps and are not as strongly adhesive as the high grade hot melt tip top adhesives which are specifically sold to strongly adhere tip tops in place. I have tried some in the past and they do work but I have found them to be inferior to the Flex Coat hot melt tiptop adhesive. The Flex Coat tiptop adhesive is relatively inexpensive and a stick lasts forever.

There's no such thing as tip / top glue, only hot melt. You can use it where ever it's needed.

The Flex coat adhesive can be used in a hot melt gun. In fact Flex Coat has a video using a hot melt gun. Not all hot melt adhesives are crated equal. Some have high bonding properties others lower. Get some and test them. Over the years I have tried many different ones, and there are definitely different grades. Case in point, the thermoplastic adhesive that is used to hold guide feet to a blanks has a much weaker bond then that used to hold tip tops in place. Both are sold by Flex coat and they each have different properties. What they have in common is that heat melts both of them. All I’m trying to say is if you randomly buy a hol melt adhesive from a hobby shop it may or may not be optimal for gluing tip tops in place. So why take the chance, use one that is known to work well. May be one of the reasons that some have had bad experiences using thermoplastic adhesives for tip tops, and instead use epoxy.

Consider the hot melt glue for fletching arrows. It has a higher melting point than any of the above mentioned glues. Thus,it wont melt and loosen in the heat of an enclosed car if left for an extended period.
