Guide placement

Laying out a 3 and 4 piece rods and according to the charts I have guides that land just past the joint so I have to move the guide. Both rods are 9' so would I add a guide or two over the length of the rod. I understand that the guides get further apart from the tip top.

Put the guide wrap on the joint than, kills two birds with one stone.

No need to add guides as adjustment is a small distance. This happens a lot.

Robert

As Spencer wrote, if the optimal guide location is on a female ferrule, you get a 2 for, a oombined ferrule and guide wrap.

As a general rule, moving a guide an inch or so to void crowding the base of a male ferrule is not an issue especially on the lower half of the rod.

Adding additional guides to avoid a ferrule is not such a good thing and ought to be held in reserve as the last and least desirable option.

Finally, it is not true that there is one and only one guide spacing layout for a rod. Truth is there a multiple, workable possibilities. The determining tests are static load tests and test casts regardless of what the charts recommend.

By adjusting the stripper distance and first running guide from the tip, you can get an acceptable spacing. None of this is written in stone.
