It is a sound concept when you consider that fly rods were actually the first rods to have a rapid reduction type guide train system. There are a couple of things to consider though; 1. It takes less double foot snake guides than single foot guides to keep the line straight and moving through them.So just replacing double foot snake guides with single foot ceramic guides1 for 1 will not work as well as adding a few more single foot guides. 2. There is definitely a running guide ring size minimum depending on the fly line diameter. There is a ratio for line size compared to the ring size.

Lance, please explain why it takes more single foot guides? Also the ring size is better determined by any knots that they need to pass, and in most cases the knots are usually outside the tip top when fishing.

Rapid reduction on a fly rod, were the line is fed straight to begin with? What are you rapidly reducing?

Even on fly rods there is a reduction needed. Larger stripping guides are often used progressively smaller to running guides etc. Even if you use a single running guide size most likely you would use different size stripping guides with the larger one coming first then progressing smaller as a reduction.

Just like spinning and casting rods the line needs to be captured from the reel or in this case the deck, stripping basket, or one’s hands and so on… Once captured it needs to be controlled to eliminate oscillation going through the guides because that is added friction that slows line down. Line is even treated to be slicker in order to maintain line speed so not to stunt your cast.

While it’s true that if you use an 8mm stripping guide you might not need much of a reduction, it certainly doesn’t capture line very well which is why 12mm, 16mm, or even 20+mm sizes are used as stripping guides. With the 18/8 you get the best of both worlds with an 18mm for capturing line and then directly to an 8mm guide to begin control. And with a higher ring height and angled Snagless frame directing line to the blank for shooting line with ease.

Also keep in mind that now smaller running guides and second stripping guide can be used(or even the second stripping guide eliminated). And we’ve even had some ProStaffers retrofitting existing fly rods with them…
