Furled leaders

I looked in the library on the above subject and found nothing. Anyone used them? Are they a fad or are they a gimmick.

I built a jig to make them about ten or twelve years ago, and demonstrated to my local saltwater fly fishing club how to make them. I can say while it was cool to watch them come together, no one in my club that used them seemed to notice any difference over a straight piece of fluoro or mono as a leader for our local waters.

If you are fishing where a delicate presentation or shock absorption is needed then they may be worth a look, but there are a lot of people that fish without them and still catch.

Furled leaders are great. They make one's presentation a whole lot better, even if you are a klutz at fly fishing. (Mwah).
I make my own using various material mono, fluorocarbon and braided fishing line. I did at one time use fly tying thread but it adds additional issues I didn't want to deal with. I think #6 braided line makes the best. But that's my opinion.
