2 -3 ft wide and how ever long you have a need for length depends on how long of rods you will build most build 10 ft with possible add on extension to 12- 14 ft if you build surf or spey rods The best day to be alive is always tomorrow !! Think out side the box when all else fails !!! Wi. Re: Rod building bench

Room for me is a premium also now. I don't plan on building any casting rod or spinning rods longer than 8 foot, so 8 foot bench would work then.
Thanks for replies. Re: Rod building bench

Bruce,
I use a standard 10 foot piece of countertop. It makes a wonderful rod bench. It sits on a couple of lower 3 feet long tables which work very well for me. Everything is portable. i.e. take off the counter top, remove the tables and the room is empty. For example: [www.menards.com] I prefer a lighter color. A lighter color reflects light and also makes it easier to spot tiny guides and tools and pull strings. The 24 inch depth for these counter tops work well for a rod bench. No need to go any wider. Then, take a couple folding tables like these, and set them up in your shop where you want the rod bench to be located. Drop the countertop on top of the tables and you will be set. I found two of these is perfect for me - the drawers are a bonus and I'd be hard pressed to build something myself half as good for 2/3's the price - the only extra work I did beyond assembly was epoxy the draw pulls and reinforce the shelf

Bert,
A great idea. But, I have a requirement to be able to be seated while I work for the full length of the work banch. As a result, I do not want any drawers under the work bench to get in the way of my legs and chair as I work up and down the blank. But, other folks have other needs, so certainly procure the bench that works best for yourself and for your needs. Good luck Re: Rod building bench

I don’t know if you have one near you...but IKEA sells very inexpensive laminate countertops without the backsplash, as well as having just a quarter round on the front edge, rather that the old school bullnose. This is what I have on my bench in my garage. I bought an 8’ and a 6’, cut the 6’ down to 4’, and hinged it to the the end of my bench, bar style. I did this so I could pull my car into the garage and to give me electrical access for charging my car. I’m very happy with the countertops and half assed ingenuity.
