Hello and Dc motor speed control ?

Hello to all,
Newbie here so have much to learn.Want to build my first rod drier. After reading many pages here I have decided that using a 12v dc gearmotor and speed contoller is the way to go for me.Will make a slip clutch and mount it straight on to the motor.Plan to use the motor at higher speed to apply finish then reduce speed to dry.Think a 100rpm gear motor is the go.Just need to know exactly what speed controller i need to get.Would like to get one with reverse switch built in.Think A PWM type is what I Need. And Will It reduce the speed down enough if I use a 100rpm gear motor.Have no experience with these.I have a power supply already.Have wanted to build a rod for years and now the journey begins.Cheers Scott from Australia

This what I use.Works Great, will handle 6V to 30V auto detect, So you don't need to set it. 100 rpm is fine, and reduce down to dry. Make sure your slip clutch work's, So you don't stall and trash your motor or gearbox, This is pre- wired, So all you do is connect you power input, And your motor output. Mount it in a small vented plastic box to keep things neat. [www.amazon.com]

There is a package deal at the bottom of the page which has the speed controller, a 60 rpm motor, a mount in a package deal:

I have built a bunch of dryers using similar components and use either a 100 rpm motor or a 50-60 rpm motor. Both motor speed work just fine for drying and finish application.

I routinely apply finish with my power rod wrapper that will wrap at speed up to 1000 rpm. However, when applying finish, I typically don't apply finish any faster than about 50 rpm.

Good luck

Scott,
That is a very good idea to have nice clean =12 volt power by using the battery as a filter.

Be safe
