I also do not care for using a heat gun, too much air movement. For me there is always just too much dust in my shop to use a heat gun when finishing a rod, no matter how hard I try to keep it clean.

Although others have had issues with a heat gun, I use only a heat gun when working with rod finish.

1. I make a point of keeping the wrapping room very clean and free of dust. From time to time I will open the windows and use the air compressor to do a complete cleaning job by using high pressure air to eradicate all dust from the room.

2. When using the heat gun, I hold the heat gun below the rod at an angle so that the moving air is moving up and not down.

But, the heat source and method is not important. It is important to find a method to apply finish on a consistent basis that works for you to produce perfect rods with a perfect finish.

As the saying goes, what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Maybe, maybe not.

Perhaps a better saying is - anything that works well for the process you use to get perfect results is a wonderful method to use and continue using.

Good luck

I don’t know about Prokote high build but with Threadmaster high build if you heat it before putting on the wraps it really shortens the pot life and will have to work very fast putting it on. Some folks that have experience and skill at it to be quick this may not be an issue. For me I do best to prevent bubbles while mixing, apply starting from the tip going to the butt and then hit the wraps with a flame.
