OK, so make sure it's a skinned carbon fiber grip . Not sure the differences but will research, when i see the gloss shine on some of them thats where that "Must be slick" thought comes in.

What are the carbon fiber grips finished with? I mean what type of coating?

I too have never experienced building any rods other than with EVA and cork and am new to this so I too like the idea of the carbon for its sensitivity and lightweight characteristics.

Can carbon fiber grips be left un-coated or un-finished and if they can be would they hold up?

Somewhere or someone maybe on here mentioned that they could snag on things.

New builder but old would like to know.

Arthur, I like the carbon fiber grips quite a bit. They are very light, sensitive and very durable. I have mostly used the CFX grips from Mudhole. They come in an unfinished matte black, which will work very well as is without any additional finish. I like to clear coat them with a couple of coats of Permagloss. I apply the PG with a foam brush with the grip rotating on some sort of mandrel. The PG cures very quickly and gives the grip a really good look. If you have any questions E-mail me.
