Rod Wrapz faux abalone

Just tried one of these out. Very easy to install. In stead of using boiling water, I used steam. Got the teapot whistling, and simply rotated the blank with skin in place and slowly moved the blank over the steam stream.

My question is, can you apply finish epoxy directly to the skin? I will be applying decals.

Gary,

Yes, you can apply epoxy directly to the abalone skin; but you'll need to apply color preserve over the decals before apply epoxy. I usually apply two coats of color preserver over my decals and let iot dry an hour or two before applying epoxy. If you applied the decals on top of the abalone, then you'll need to put color preserver over the decals and abalone before epoxying.

Yes you can apply finish directly to the Rod Wrapz.... I personally do not use CP on the decals, I do not know why you would need to.

Do the Rod Wrapz abalone products really capture the appearance of real abalone?

Same as Don, never use CP on Decals, never found a need.

They're really pretty good, but you can't really expect them to have the same refractive ability as the actual shell. So you weigh the pros and cons of the product based on ease of installation, cost, etc.

I use them a lot in the area between the split handle on spinning rods and it looks fantastic and if I knew how to upload pics, I would show you some of mine. You can also use it under any "exposed" reel seat to add a little "pop". It works really well and its fun to experiment with.

Hello All.

If you get RodMaker magazine just look in V-21 / I-2 / Pg. 20, the picture on the bottom is my rod and the Rod Wrapz is in front of the fore grip under a small cross wrap (if you can call it that).

Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines.
