North fork composites fly rod guide sizing & spacing

I have a 2 piece 9' #8 IM-Gen 2 North fork composites blank, I would appreciate help with guide sizes and spacing. I have built a number of spinning and casting rods but this will be my first attempt at a fly rod build. I went to the North fork composites web site for guidance with little or no info available. The fishing application primarily will be Texas / Louisiana coast with occasional trips to Michigan for fall salmon and steelhead

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hmm, NFC? - {Edgerods} the new greatest rod company on the plant? And you can't get a Build recipe?? One would think Aleks Maslov would be all over this. At least have his Email address accessible Here On The Forum?? But unfortunately it appears to be Hidden?? I would have told you to contact Batson for help, But Geoff, Emailed me {Quote} That I’ve listed a link to the correct location for NFC / Edge Rods below. Batson is No longer the exclusive wholesale distributor for NFC blanks. We sell some models to our manufacturing customers but have significantly reduced our offering based on their “new model.” I appreciate your understanding. Thank you, Sincerely, Geoff Staples. {[edgerods.com] So I would Call edge, Unless someone here has built on that blank or want's to try and walk you through it? Cheers Jaa

Michael,
Forgot to mention I use thd end of the guide foot for my measurements, not the end of the guide ring, or center of the snake guide. Makes it easier to measure, at least for me. My guide sizes were also for Snake brand universal guides.

Are all 8 wt. North Fork blanks identical? That would make guide spacing less complicated. Using the same lines on all North Fork rods in the same ambient temperature would also simplify things. Finally, if all fly-casters using North Fork rods had the same casting ability that would simplify an exclusive guide-spacing chart for North Fork rods.

if you go to different web sites you will find a lot of different setting for guides , but they are different but the same, the numbers don't change much, from one site to another ,
if you do a statistic test on the rod it should work for you , the stripping guide is what counts , when you are reaching for line you don't want to reach passed the stripping guide
[ your are reach will tell you where to put it ] [www.rodcents.org] an plug in your reach rod length distance from the grip that you will have ,
[ add about 2 inches to your reach for the stripping guide ]

I ordered a four piece 9' 8wt blank from them and Graphite Full Wells grip and fighting butt about 3 weeks ago and apparently they are making them when you order. I am going to use Fuji KW 16 and KW 12 Torzite stripper guides and 10 Ti L frame SIC 7 mm for runners and a 7 mm Ti SIC Arowana tip top.

Lance,
Just curious as to your thinking about putting such expensive guides on a rod.

Any thing that you hope to gain or lose by your guide selection.

Just wondering.

Be safe

When the rod is finished it will be worth around $900 to $1100 and I would of put about $420 into it in components. You won't be able to buy one in a store anywhere. I build performance moving toward the most advanced components I can get my hands on. That's what great about this hobby, why settle for mediocre. The other thing I am going to do is anodize the Ti frames black. I don't do fancy wraps but I know how to put a rod together that will work. You can spend a lot of time on cheap components doing a bunch of decoration or you can spend money on good components and make an exceptionally performing rod. Its the small details when combined that make performance happen. I would use Torzite L frame guides but they don't make them. I also prefer Alconite over SIC because they are lighter but Fuji in their infinite wisdom quit putting Alconite rings in titanium frames. The rods I build will last 30 years with reasonable care because of those Ti framed guides.

Bill, I was not actually planning on painting or coating the blank.

Christopher,
Copy that on not painting or coating the blank. It will be a lighter and more sensitive rod if you do not add any coating to the blank. No need to add anything.

Good luck
