Rod repair rates

I have been building rods for a few years now, mostly for myself, and greatly enjoy it. I have recently taken on a lot of work for local tournament fisherman doing rod repairs. Broken guides, tip tops, etc. I realize this may be highly inidividualized but is there a “going rate” for repair work? Such as a price per guide that is the industry norm?

It's all subjective, as in, how good is your work, what are you worth per hour, add 20 % to your time calculation and your value. Next learn how to pull three different colors out of every spool of nylon thread you use, accept black of course. You need more drying motors, and adapters to save time and protect yourself from wasting time fixing unnecessary and totally avoidable problems. Alcohol lamps, box cutters and 100 count sleeves of single edge razors are your best friend. I'd much rather do repairs than build new rods, the turns are quicker, the challenge is different and you learn a lot of creative thinking and problem solving. Welcome to the games.

Josh

I don't think there is a formal industry rate. Just what the market will bear in each locale. Call some rod and reel places and get an estimate for various types of repairs. You can gauge where you are compared to the going area rate and adjust your charges accordingly.

Quality work is foremost but turn around time also a key factor in a successful rod repair business.

I agree with Paul I would rather do rod repair than build new rods.

Good luck

John

The growing popularity of one-piece rods has stimulated the rod-repair business.

It's not on line it's a Magazine.

Go to the RodMaker Magazine tab on the left side of this page and you can buy a back issue.
