Split grip for Fuji VSS 16-15

Took the advice on an earlier thread and decided to try out the Fuji VSS 16-15 instead of the VSS 16. I ordered the FGV16RC rear grip not really thinking about it, and it doesn't fit. Should I have ordered the Size 17 FGV grip? Or is there another grip that fits this thing? Thanks!

you might have to make it fit or build one

The new Versatile Spinning Reel Seat designed by Fuji®, improves overall strength and performance over standard reel seats and can be used with a much wider range of reels. The slim, smooth streamlined shape provides increased comfort and a superb fit for the angler's hand, while the curved hood supports the hand and fingers from the first cast to the last catch. Increased comfort and support leads to better rod performance!

VSS Reel Seats are lightweight, extremely tough and designed with a unique “collar” that not only looks stylish, but protects and reinforces cork in critical areas near the seat. Order cork handle number BGV16/17 for a perfect fit every time. Available in a variety of hood colors and diameters.

NOTE: SIZE 16-15 DOES NOT FIT STANDARD FGVSS -16 CORK & EVA OR RGK6016RC GRIPS

Have to use the FGV1615RC to fit the VSS1615. What’s the diameter of the blank where the reel goes? If is less than 13mm it will be cheaper to buy the VSS16 without a hood, since you already have the hood. The ODs of both the VSS 16 and VSS 1615 are identical, thus any size 16 hood will fit them. it’s just their ID that are different, i.e. 13 mm vs 15 mm. This makes the cork handle were it fits over the reel seat a little thicker for the size 16 handle vs the size 1615 handle, and thus they do not fit each other.

I find it odd that they don’t sell the arbors anywhere for the VSS16, and they don’t sell the grip anywhere for the VSS16-15. While I’m at it, why doesn’t mud hole sell the BGA95? Seems like every time I place an order lately, I have to make one at Mudhole and one at Get Bit

Eventhough Anglers Resource has the FGV1615RC grip listed in their catalog, I cannot find it for sale anywhere. I think I used these grips before but not absolutely sure, nor do I know where I might have gotten them. So it appears that your only option is to get the VSS16 and it it doesn’t fit the blank the get the VSS17 with the matching FGV17RC grip. Maybe Jim Ising might be able to help in finding this 1615 cork grip if needed. Another option is to try the Fuji Winn grips for the VSS 1615 or VSS17. They are more expensive but very nice. I use the SK2 hidden thread hood with either the Fuji Winn thread cover sleeve or the carbon fiber thread cover sleeve. You have to cut the threads back a little on the VSS seat to use the SK2 hidden thread hood.

As always, thanks Norm. The customer wants cork on this one, so I think I'm just going to go with the 17. Jim sent me arbors for the VSS16 (which I really, really appreciated), but the ID of the seat and the OD of the blank were too close. Same blank this go round, so I was going to try the 16-15.

Anglers Resource does have the size 13 rigid foam arbors but they are not listed any where. I just turn down a polyurethane abor, or shim with dry wall tape. I agree if a company is going to sell a Fuji reel seat they should also sell all the grips and arbors that can be used with them. I also get tried of placing orders to several retailers to get everything I need.

The VSS 17 is my favorite size, so I concur with your choice. Since you are getting the VSS17 reel seat and matching cork handle, you may want to play a little bit and try to get the VSS 1615 to fit the FGV16RC grip by sanding the inside of the grip using a Dremel round grinding stone to evenly thin the cork so it fits. Unless you are planning to send back both the seat and the grip, you have nothing nothing to lose and it may work out well so you can use it on another build. I like doing things like this, just to see if it can be done.

Our catalog shows the items we carry. We try to make sure our customers have all the peripherals but in the end it's up to them whether they carry the item or not. They usually have a similar item if they do not carry ours.
