looking for some feedback on Cabelas FT flyrod blanks.
8.6 for 5 is what I am considering, the other option is a St. Croix SCIV--865 but it would have to be back ordered.
The Cabelas FT appears to be a Loomis blank which I've heard has a reputation for easy breakage which scares me because I hike through some rough country at times going from pool to pool and do not want a rod that I have to treat like the wifes fine china.
basically I need a good fairly fast action 5 wt. that isn't overly sensitive to slight abuse. thanks

Loomis blanks do not have a reputation for easy breakage, unless you are talking about abuse, which will break any blank. If you know you are going to be putting the blank through some hard times, you would be better off not choosing anybody's top end performance blank - they are built around a structure which although very durable for fishing, will not take the bumps and bangs that less performance oriented blanks will.

Aslo, Cabelas blanks, whether made by Loomis or not, are not Loomis blanks. They are made for Cabelas and do not necessarily have a counterpart in the G. Loomis line of blanks. Cabelas has some excellent blanks and many fishermen swear by them. Good value for sure.

I recently put together an SCIV from St. Croix. It is one of the most outstanding fly rods I have ever used. It might be worth the wait.

Go with the SCIV! I built a 9' 4wt for a guy recently, and it blows away my Loomis GL3!

Built SCIV 9ft 5wt. Excellent blank, would use it as primary blank in building, but now that Loomis has reintroduced the IMX in flyrods, all my efforts will be for this blank. Just need it in 4 piece to make complete.

I have built rods on the cabela's FT in 8'-6" 3wt.,9'-4wt.,8'-6' 5wt., and 9'-5wt. all in 2 pieces and have had excellent results. I use the 4 wt. as an everyday rod and have dragged it through willows, woods and dropped on more than one occasion and it has held up nicely.
