I had to move from central Florida to north east Texas. I am having a hard time finding a shipping container for the long spinning rods. We all know casting is easy to ship. I finally found a source for 3” cardboard cylinders, they still are very expensive. Anyone have this one locked?

Go to a Lowes,
Pick up 3 inch thinwall pvc pipe. A 10 foot piece of pipe will be about $9. Take a piece of cardboard and cut a matching circle for each end of the pipe. Stuff in packing at each end of the tube and use packing tape to attach the cardboard over the ends of the pipe.

It is called Drain pipe.

I use an abrasive wheel on my chop saw to cut the pvc pipe cleanly.

Ready supply , tough enough and is a clean easy container.

Since I do a lot of rods, I also picked up a roll of plastic tubing and a heat sealing machine. After completing the build and making an address label, I slip both the rod and the label into the plastic film tubing and use the sealing machine to seal each end of the plastic tubing.
It makes a nice professional way to pack the rods and keep the rod clean and free of finger prints, even if you don't ship the rod right away.

Have you checked with your local carpet retailers. carpet is shipped on large heavy walled tubes about 8 to 10 ft. long.. They may just point you to the dumpster out back.

Although carpet tubes will work, Paul is right - They are heavy. No need to pay the extra insurance for a bunch of heavy packaging.

I’ve tried pvc and I have one in a carpet tub right now, I was hopping someone knew of something helper. I’ve paid as much as $70. Shipping.

see if you can get an account with your shipper ? what you have to do to get the good rates , if you know of some retailer that can help you out??

Yeah, shipping rates are nuts with anything i believe 8 feet or longer. I was quoted $134.00 to ship an 8 foot PVC tube a while back . Like Bill mentioned if you set up an account with a Fed Ex type outfit it can be much cheaper but you look to be doing it as a one time thing which is unfortunate for people who do it once in a blue moon. If you can come in a hair under 8 feet with the tube it will be much much cheaper .

I have a Fed Ex account and did a couple of test shipments - with different lengths.
Typical shipping to various destinations with lengths of 8 feet or less and the cost was $20-$30

But, as soon as the length jumped to 8 feet 1 inch, the price jumped to $150.

So, unless you want to ship the rod as freight, try to keep the total package length to 8 feet or less.

This has changed, because 2 years ago, Fed Ex would ship up to 10 feet length packages with no balloon charge. However, not true today.

Thanks for the info Roger , what i just learned is that if something is exactly 8 feet you can still get the lower rate , i thought once you hit 8 feet the charge skyrocketed but maybe it's 8 feet one inch where the price skyrockets .

I ran various shipping length and found it was all right up to 8 feet.

But, at 8 feet - one inch and above the price jumped.
