rebuild paint

I am rebuilding a G.Loomis surf rod and need to repaint the blank with flat black paint to cover up original paint scratches. I want to cover this paint with U-40 perma gloss. I tried Krylon on an old blank, let dry 24 hrs, then applied U-40, but the paint then dissolved and rubbed off. Any ideas on which paint to use?

right paint but wrong finish PG is xylene based one of the chemicals in lacquer thinner and eats lacquer based paints and finishes .
as I have suggested many times the rod dancer thread master finish as it is water based urethane and is as good as pg or luma seal with out the harsh chemicals and gives the same hard tough finish with the glossy look and is applied the same a pg or luma seal, I mount the rod in the wrapper and use either a sponge or a hunk of artificial lambs wool mop for refinishing floors and turn the rod fast enough to move along quickly making sure it covers and still will level
be careful a you will be supporting the rod about 4-5 inches from the tip so don't apply to much pressure to the blank so ti stays in the roller support and chuck .
method 2 tie a line to the tip top and hang it about 5-6 ft from the floor and wipe it on from the tip to butt let it hang for at least an hour before handling it or check to see if it is tacky in a spot that won't show.
I have had great results with rebuilds doing either method and using the threadmaster finish as it is thin and goes on easy.
I order 4 ounce bottles at a time when your done you have to squeeze the excess air out of the bottle so it doesn't form a crust or totally harden in the bottle that is the reason for the 4 ounce quantity bought.
Hope this helps you with your project Happy holidays and happy building

Some Krylon paints require 7 days to fully cure. Not sure which.

CREATEX AUTO-AIR air brush paint is trouble free and you can cover it with anything you choose. Some metallic and pearl colors will require a base or tinted undercoat.

If this is the old GL3 flat black it's very tender finish you can't even wipe it down with alcohol without removing it, I can't guarantee any other finish will not pull up the finish.
