Looking for some suggestions on a swim jig rod. I have a customer that has asked for one to throw light jigs 1/4 to 3/8 oz. with a trailer. Since I never throw swim jigs I thought I would ask if anyone has and could recommend what power, action and length of a rod that best suits this presentation. From what I have read on the bass forums it looks like most like a MH but can't agree on the action of the tip. He is open to length as well. Not a tall individual either.

Personally I like a 7ft-7ft 3" rod for light swim jigs a medium heavy with a fast action. The fast action in my opinion gives a stiff enough tip to get a good hook set but flexible enough to keep them pinned. If he is fishing the swim jig around heavier cover or decides to throw a heavier duty swim jig I would bump it up to a heavy power.

Thanks for the suggestions. Matthew I am a big fan of the Rod Geeks rods and do around 30 a year of their product. I'll check with my customer and see how he feels about the 6'6" although mostly I use the Bass 4 the power and action will be the same

Look at st croix in the sciv line they have a blank specifically for that application

Tom - Looking at the specs for the St Croix swim jig rod, and it is it is very possible that a Spin jig blank is what you are looking for. The MHX spin jig blanks are very similar to the mag bass blanks with the same number except that the tip is a little softer, but still very fast. Could use the SJ843 or SJ813 in either the standard or HM graphite. The Bushido SJ blanks are also very nice. I have made a bunch of spin jig rods and they make very versatile spinning and casting rods. I have used them for swim jigs and they worked great, but also used them with other types of baits. Never really thought about a dedicated swim jig rod but a SJ rod might fit the bill.

what type of line the angler will be using on the rod could make a big difference in the blank selection, in my opinion. braid really needs a 'softer ' blank, monofilament line needs a stiffer one. just my 2 cents

He is going to be using 17 lb mono and he has told me today that he would like a 6'9"

From MHX there is the 6'9" SJ 813 (8-15 lb), the EPS81 XF (10-17 lb), and the MB 813 XF(10-17 lb). If he wants to spend more, the Rainshadow Eternity 6'8" blanks are very nice, and the 6'9" Point Blanks are phenomenal.

Thanks Norm I'll show him those. I don't have a MHX here but I do have both the EPS81 and a Immortal 6'8" that I built for myself and it is an amazing blank. It would be nice to move him to the Point Blank but this guy is still using the Curado Bantams , the old old greenies. He just bought a MHX MB874 frog rod from me so he is stating to spend $$$$ lol

I still have a couple of the old original green curados, been using them for over 20+ years. They are almost indistructable. Just made a friend an MHX 874 frog rod just a few weeks ago, he loves it. If you have not tried a Point Blank, get one they are really something special. I have made 4 for myself over the past year, and several more for friends.
