Best rod finish epoxy from retail stores

I attempted to use Gorilla Glue epoxy and saw that it was pretty horrible for rod finish. I am looking for a slow cure epoxy that I can get at my local store because I dont have the time to order more Pro-Kote. What would be the best choice for epoxy that could be found at Home Depot or Walmart?

The closest thing to rod finish epoxy would be the clear table top finish.

An adhesive epoxy like Gorilla, Loc-Tite, etc really aren't suited

The epoxies used for finishing thread wraps isn't quite the same stuff as the epoxy adhesive you find at the local home hardware store. As Fred mentioned, the table top finishes would be more suitable, but many of those are not advisable for outdoor use. Check the manufacturer's recommendations.

I have a couple small packets of pro-kote left but its not enough to finish the rods I currently have.

I see that Walmart has Varathane Spar Urethane. Would this be a possible alternative?

Envirotex table top finish. I know a few builders who just use that

None of the epoxy adhesives will be suitable.

A long oil, spar varnish is good, but getting ever more difficult to find. Most hardware "spar varnishes" are polyurethanes. Next best, immediately available at a local hardware store would be a urethane finish, preferably labeled spar (which has no objective standard properties), suitable for outdoor use, such as the Varathane product Ken mentioned. Finally, one of the polyurethane products labeled spar and suitable for exterior use.

Try "Envirotex." At least one commercial wrap finish is sourced from this company (ETI).

You might try going to a marine supplier for a urethane that they use on wooden boats now as it has built in uv protectorate and dries quickly if you don't want to use epoxy finish then use U40 Perma Gloss or lumiseal urethane,ThreadMaster ONE One-Part Rod Finish all are available through Mud hole

I just don't see spending many hours on a rod then taking a chance on some unknown finish for the wraps. Could end up doing the whole thing over.

I agree with Michael, using something that is made for other uses, because one is in a hurry, can result in less then a good result!

Parks super glaze, probably the same thing but I don't know for sure. Envirotex is usually sold in arts / crafts / hobby stores or home improvement stores.

Good luck

If you must, I would get a can of water based urethane for exterior use. Clear Gloss. Expect to use 4 to 5 coats.

Overnight shipping of the right product is an option. Why risk time invested on a rod, driving to stores, and spending time researching when you know the best product for the job?

i guess at this rate, Ill just wait. It doesnt make sense to mess something up because of timing issues. No real reason to complete it in a certain time frame. Thanks for the suggestions. I can always go get an alternative and test it on a crap blank I have.

Good decision. I always figure that the best product for the job is the product made for that job.
