I wouldn't do it. You can make really good rod racks from pvc pipe and hang them overhead in the garage if you have one. It's cost effective but a little time consuming.

I used a sheet of plywood. 8x 4.ft
Cheap casters in each corner to make it mobile and a 2 x 4 on the outer edge of the two longest sides.
A 2 x 4 down the middle supported 4 ft up by a half 2 x 4 at each end. Braced at teh base by another 1/2 a 2x4 on the plywood.
Used a forstner bit to cut 2 inch holes every 3 inches on center or so on the outer two 2 x 4 for the rod butts to stand.
Dowels about 2 inches long on either side of the middle 2x 4 stop the rods falling sideways.
I get about 25-30(yeah i know) rods on each side of these and being at an angle the rods can exceed 8 ft and not hit the ceiling.
So they carry about 50-60 rods each in a mobile frame.

I am not prepared to say how many of these holders i have.
My name is Lou and i obviously have a rod problem.

It shouldn't hurt them to hang them by their tips, provided the hooks you use allow them to hang straight down and do not apply any odd pressure to the tiptop or damage the ceramic ring.

Yes, but . . .

Best to store the rods in bags and hang the bags on the cup hooks. Hanging a rod on metal cup hooks where the tip top or other guide is slipped over the hook is maybe not a good idea long term. There is the potential for a dissimilar metals thing to rear its head.

And as Tom advised, the rods ought to hang freely with nothing pressing against them.

In years gone by, I have seen rods that have been hung by their tips, get a very bad bend in the tip of the blank.

If you did want to hang a rod, I would suggest that you take a line and put several wraps around the rod, and then put a loop in the line and hang the rod from the line.

By doing this, there would not be any angular stress on any part of the rod or blank.

Any more, when storing rods, with no reels on them, I simply lay them in a box long enough to hold the rod and all of its companions. I interlace the rods, butt to, tip to butt, so that the box loads equally. It is easy to lay a 100 rods in a box that is 18 inches on a side by the length of the longest rod plus 4 inches.

By keeping the rods in a covered box, they are not subject to room conditions of any dirt, dust or other contaminations.

You can do the same thing by keeping the box on the rafters in a garage. When one stores an open rod in a typical garage, it is subject to all of the stuff that is part of being in a garage.

Good luck

Thanks guys, think I will go with the box idea instead of hooks as it will probably take up even less room in the basement.
