matte finish

Should work. I wet sand with 1000 - 2000 grit wet dry paper. Gives a nice smooth matte / satin finish without the worry of removing to much finish.

You cannot undo that way of deglossing, so why not take a piece of scrap gloss blank and try it on that? I expect it will have a directional look to it, and it will require very careful, consistent, treatment. It also may go too far, and if the blank is painted, the only option then is to go all the way and take all the paint off. Re: matte finish
