wanting to use permagloss on a rod that is factory made but has a matt finish on the blank.. just going to add a couple coats in between the guides and on the butt section.. should I mask off the edges of the wraps or is it nessary.. i don't plan on slobbering on the permagloss on top of the wrap but may touch the edges in places.. anyone do this before? Thanks. Ed

The PC will probably lift the factory finish.

my friend has 3 new powell bass rods.. the blanks are matt black/greyish color.. he said after just 2 times out they are all scuffed up on the blanks and look as bad as his 10 yr old berkley im7's.. just thinking out loud on a fix.. maybe sand a small area with scotch brite to see if the blank has some sort of cheap covering on it? thanks in advance for any help. Most blanks aren't designed to handle much in the way of scuffing, beating, banging, etc. I suspect that no matter what you coat them with, they're going to all look the same again after another few trips.

Ed, I just coated a bare blank with permagloss and took the finish right over a butt wrap/feather inlay. Looks fine, nice and glossy. I would just run the finish right over the wraps to the guides and not have to worry about the edge, which will be a little tricky and will take time. You want to be able to work fast with Permagloss. I used a disposable foam brush and it looks great.

Re the scuffed up rods, I think that is a person problem, not a rod problem, and I wouldn't give him any expectations that most likely wouldn't be met. Agree with Tom.

thanks for the Ideas Guys.. I think i will try the PG on the split butt section to see what happens.. If it does lift the finish I can fix it with FC or such with pigment added.. On the scuffs tho.. him and I both have 10 year old Berkley series one IM 7 $70 rods that look better (scuff wise) than these 3 powells.. he and I tounament fish and these Powells got treated the same as the berkley's.. thats the part that don't add up.. the berkley's are also fairly dull finish,, so I think they may be just a better product for 1/2 the $$ unfortunately they are not made anymore-- Ed

10 year old rods -- Maybe it is time to totally rebuild them take the finish off and go for bare graphite if that is what they are
Or repaint them I am sure you can put a better lighter set of guides on and get better performance from them
A coat of good furniture spray wax may help the newer rods stay better looking I have always found that Mat Finish does not have much durability

re doing the berkley's would remove the good JuJu.. JK.. haha.. anyway the berkley's are fine.. we just replace a guide now and then.. (like one guide on one rod a year).. we have decided to take one berkley at a time and redo them as time goes by.... the just of this post i guess... he is not too impressed with these powell MAX 3D's so far.. between the 2 of us we have 18 berkley series one IM 7 rods and have snapped 2 in 10 yrs and replaced 6-9 guides on the whole lot of 18.. on a side note does anyone know who makes powell blanks?.. I guess Powell makes the blanks, they design the rod specs, have their own mandrels, lay up patterns, and test the final product till they get what they wanted. The actual rollup, baking, finishing and build up of the rod is a well known manufacturing process that can be done worldwide by many facilities.
