Rotten stone

In the last issue of Rod Maker, There's an article about finishing bamboo rods using a dip method. In the article the author talks about applying a polish made up of rotten stone and lindseed oil. I've started to look around these parts for the rotten stone, but with no luck so-far. Can anyone tell me where I might find it? I've tried all the local hardware stores, and paint stores.

Another question I have is, will this polishing method work on Polyurathane? any help is greatly appreciated.

I get rotten stone at the local hardware store. I'm sure yours could order it for you. You want to use rotten stone with water, not linseed oil. Be careful to use a blosk when rubbing so you don't round corners. You can use it on poly urethane, but you have to let it cure really well (at least a week) first. Urethane dries on the surface fast, but will roll up if its not cured all the way through.

Why would you use water with rotten stone instead of linsead oil over a urithane finish?
