I'm building a rod for my pops it's a 5ft ultra light rainshadow blank. He wants something similar to the microwave guide series but being a cheap a$$ doesn't want to spend that much money. What if I start out with a larger guide and piggy back a smaller guide behind it? If Indid that what sizes should I use and would a particular guide be better suited for this?
My next thought which Is probably more correct what if I started out with a 16 then moved down to a 10 then 8 then a 6 -6 - 6 Or would going from a 16 - 8 -6-6-6-6 work? Kenne Re: Similar to Microwave Guide Series

Unlikely you can get the height required to stack two that close and have them center. Some of the PacBay Minima guides will do this, however.
Otherwise just build with a New Concept type set up. .............. Re: Similar to Microwave Guide Series

Try the minima 4 hard chrome guides. Use minima-4 sizes16, 8, & 5 match guides (they have the height), followed by minima-4 size 4 fly guides as runners. With matching tip top, all for less than $8.00. Set up similar to kr concept. How's that for good & cheap!

Ken...... you can get the complete set of MicroWave guides for under $34 shipped to your door..... That is not very expensive for a complete set of guides. If it is still out of your budget stay tuned real soon for the AirWaves...... getting close.... _______________________________ God Bless, Don Morse 800-516-1750 ext. 1207 / don@americantackle.us Rod Building..... What Jim said... My dad passed when I was 32. Build him a quality rod and one day it will be yours to pass down to your son, just sayin'...

Awesome I order four! I live in AZ how quick do you guys ship? Also what's your recommendation for guide placement on a 5' ultra light? I am pretty fimiliar with the microwave series however I have never put one on a rod that small before. Re: Similar to Microwave Guide Series

Thank you Kenneth, in most cases we try to ship within 24 hours. With the Microwave guides just follow the instructions for the guides closest to the reel and static test the rest. We have played with moving them closer to the reel with smaller reels with good luck. As I mentioned above, if you want to try the minima-4s, use sizes16, 8 &5 Match Guides (XM4XG), followed by 3 to 4 size 4 minima-4 fly guides (XF4XG). The tip top will have a size 4 ring (XFM4XT). Total cost less than $8.00. I think these will be the lightest guides you can put on an ultralight rod. I have a 6 1/2' ultralight with these guides and it casts and performs extremely well. The airwave guides as mentioned above are also a very good option but cost a little more and may weigh a little more. Your choice! If you want to experiment buy both (they inexpensive enough) and test to see which one you like better. Extra guides never go to waste! Re: Similar to Microwave Guide Series
