Mystery Blank

Greetings...

Been registered here for a few months and have really enjoyed the education. This is my first post and it regards a blank I purchased ridiculously cheap- cheap enough that I know almost nothing about it, except that it's 9 ft.

From searching through the archives here, I believe it is an old 3M blank. It has a very deep, almost translucent reddish brown color and the tip-into butt metal ferrule. However, I'm not sure of the line size (feels like a 7 or 8) or how old it is.

The only identification on the blank is a sticker on the bottom of the butt with "CF-7140" written on it. This is more curiosity than critical, but any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

You may be right. I remember the 3M System blanks had an unusual ferrule, with a metal sleeve on the butt section. A photo might help.

The 3M, Scientific Anglers blanks were made with a ferrule that has the male portion epoxied into the tip section, and the female ferrule epoxied into the butt section, these were made in the mid 70's to mid 80's. I still have several NOS blanks. I made many of them back then and the 7' light spinning blank was a favorite. I have 3 customers who are still fishing the ones I made for them. Great blank.

About ten years ago a friend showed me two 3M fly rod blanks, the ones with the butt over tip metal ferrules. The 8' foot blank was a System G6 (4wt). I don't have access to the System 6 (6wt) but my notes indicate it was 8'7" (maybe a typo on my part). Beautifully colored blanks and arrow straight. My friend wanted the 6wt built for streamer fishing, and for my effort I was given the 4wt blank.

I'm surprised your blank doesn't have the blank information silk screened on the blank.
