So I have a question I have always heard not to wrap guides with metallic thread but I have seen some photos of other builders who have done guide wraps with metallic thread. So my question is can you wrap guides with metallic thread without having issues with guides pulling out. Please let me know your opinions on the topic.
Thanks, Matt Re: Wrapping guides with Metallic thread?

I have used metallics for decades with no apparent strength issues. They have a nylon core that provides the strength to the thread. Re: Wrapping guides with Metallic thread?

working with metallic thread is harder then nylon for new builders in my opinion because of some problem that happen with this thread.
you need to read a post back a page that was posted on august 1st titled "how many of us are willing to pay ---" Re: Wrapping guides with Metallic thread?

Matthew,
I wrap 95% of all my freshwater rods with metallic threads. I have never had any problem relating to the thread breakage or coming loose. I will admit the metallic threads are more difficult to wrap with, especially if you are using a mechanical thread tensioner. If you apply too much tension when on the thread the metallic outer thread has a tendency to put down around in inner nylon core. I would recommend staying clear of dark blue metallic thread as they fade terrible. At least all of the brands that I have tried. I have a shipment on the way right now containing a spool of Madeira Sapphire to give that brand a try. Don Campbell don@sensorfishingrods.com Re: Wrapping guides with Metallic thread?

If you use metallic threads for trim wraps (looks) only the thread strength is not an issue and you need to use very little tension wrapping it. This eliminates the problem of breaking the thin metallic foil ribbon which makes the thread "metallic" and having to rewrap the entire guide foot. Re: Wrapping guides with Metallic thread?

I don't think a wrap of melallic thread [ 100% of wrap ] will be as strong as regular thread I could be wrong , how will it pack down or how will you burnish it ? trim wraps is one thing but the 100% wrap is the question [ I just don't see it ] do let us know if these wraps are 100% metallic or just trim wraps [ big difference I think ] William Sidney AK Re: Wrapping guides with Metallic thread?

Built a 9', 4 piece, 5 weight fly rod a couple months ago using YLI Silk Sparkle, which is 3/0 silk with a single nylon metallic thread for all the guide, ferrule, winding check, and inscription wraps. There is a learning curve. Back off the tension. Be prepared to pack a bit more than usual. Depending on blank vs thread color it can be difficult to see gaps so pack, pack, pack. Easy does it making the whip finish else the metallic component will not play pretty. I wrapped double footed snake guides and cannot imagine there will be a structural problem for the ferrule or guide wraps. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
