winn grips, split grip

Question, in preparing the butt grip on a split grip I reamed it a little too much. Can I wrap tape to the blank in a effort to make a tighter fit on the butt. The Winn grip I had did not have a re moveable end cap making it a little difficult to get a good fit and I screwed it up by making it a little to big.

Phil,
Yes, of course. It is done all of the time.

When adding tape to a blank as an arbor - it is not a bad idea to use more narrow tape and to also leave 1/8th inch spaces between the rods of tape wraps. Then, when you glue up the grip, fill the spaces with glue so that you have a good glue to blank to grip contact.

I would wrap the butt end of the blank with some thread. Not a nice packed / burnished wrap, just a quick unevenly spaced wrap, smearing in some adnesive as built the thread up.

Phil, Winn Grips now offers a split grip with the rear grip tennoned to allow the use of a butt cap. Check there web-site. On the rear grip that you are using, I use my bandsaw to remove the end of the grip right at the end of the grip material. Then reem to fit the blank and reinstall and sand the end of the grip. Hope this helps for future builds.

In contrast to the comment by Ernest, you can use a flat ended drill bit to drill out a split grip to fit a blank, without having to cut off the butt cap and putting it back on again.
The best way to do this drilling is to put the split grip end into a lathe. Then, spin the split grip while holding the drill bit in the chuck that is in the tail stock.
This method keeps the hole centered in the split grip and makes for a nice fit, assuming that you have the correct sized bit.
