Hi Marnie,
The most common Madeira thread used in rodbuilding is Polyneon. It comes in two sizes, 40 and 60. The 40 is slightly smaller than "a" thread and the 60 is finer still. Supertwist comes in size 30 which would be larger than "a" but smaller than "d". Burmilana is a wool blend and comes in size 12 and would be roughly the same size as "d". I've only used the Polyneon and don't know the suitability of the others for rodbuilding. I've used the Polyneon 40 for a lot of builds, including 30 and 50lb game rods with double overbinds and haven't had any issues with strength.

The polyneon comes in two sizes, # 40 and # 60. While # 40 is closest in size to A wrapping thread, I do not know what wrapping thread size will match closely with # 60, if at all. The PAS Store sells it over the internet.

If you want the easy way to buy Madeira, get them from here: [northeastrodbuilders.com]. It doesn't come in size D, but if you wrap as a band you can get teh same effect and save time without it looking so bulky.

I can tell you this, Madeira has so many colors it is hard to choose even with a color card in front of you. Billy has taken the guess work out of it and put together shade packs.

Thanks Brandon. They have 351 colors, I think in shades of Blue alone they have 60. Nothing worse then getting an order and realizing 3 or 4 shades are almost identical, or they just flat out don't go together. The shade packs have 5 spools per pack which gives you the effect you are looking for, you can see what a diamond or chevron wrap will look like in that link I posted. I spent countless hours putting those wraps together so there is even less guesswork involved.
