I'm building my first 2 peice spinning rod, Kencor B10M, a 10 ft surf rod. I've just read the latest article in RodMaker and am still not sure about spacing. Kencor only puts 5 guides on their factory rods, but I thought 8 would be sufficient. Please advise. Brian McGrath Re: Guide Spacing

The number you need really depends upon the individual blank - its taper, power, etc. For what it's worth, and without knowing anything about that particular blank, I think 5 guides is cutting it a bit close. Without seeming to condemn commercial rod company practices, you have to understand that they may be using the absolute minimum number of guides possible in an effort to keep costs down. Most of the 10' surf rods I have built have ended up with at least 6 or 7 guides (spinning) and about 7 or 8 (casting). These are minimums. It may well be that 8 guides is perfect for your particular application. ................................. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
