Has anyone tried Harbor Freight's 40" lathe? It looks pretty nice and is on sale for $79. What else do you need to buy in order to make it functional?

Haven't tried it but if its like most lathes and you want to turn seat inserts and the like you'll need a live center if it doesn't have one and a jacobs chuck for the tailstock so you can bore a hole through it after it is turned. Beyond that it's just a matter of adding whatever 'toys' you want!

Larry,

In the issue of RodMaker that is mailing today, we have the first in an in-depth series of articles on making your own reel seat inserts. The first article, by Andy Dear, is on choosing a lathe and the necessary accessories. It is very informative and you will get a lot out of it. Andy did a great job covering all the basics.
