finish on cork/foam handle?

I am going to try to make a rod with dodger colors on the handle, guides, and maybe a marblization. So, I am going to put thin foam accent rings in the cork and I know the white will get dingy after use on the water. Is it common to put finish on cork? I am racking my brain trying to think how else to put white in my handle, and other than from a sheet of foamies I cant think of anything I can do without an expensive lathe.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Without a lathe how are you planning on building a grip with cork and foam? You are correct that white foam will pick-up oil from hands and dirt. Sealing with cork seal will help, but not sure for how long on the foam.

I use white acrylic for my accent rings, it turns quite easily and do not absorb anything. I find the acrylic at Tap Plastic stores where they sell 4"X4" sample pieces for $1.00

White poker chips, vinyl Floor tile (less than a buck for a 12 x 12" tile at places like Lowe's) also work Cut out rings with a 1 1/2" hole saw.

I have a hobby lathe, not a heavy duty lathe so I have never tried to turn anything but cork and foam. TAP has stores you can walk in? I thought it was mail order only.

When you say white poker chips, do you mean the cheap plastic ones they sell at CVS right? Not the ABS or clay expensive ones?

Some builders use pieces of plastic CD cases in various colors for accent rings. You can use anything made of hard plastic, acrylic and such. Just use your imagination. Personally I wouldn't use white foam accent rings in a cork handle. I think it would get dirty quick and loose all it's charm. How about a cap off a white plastic pill bottle. Everyone has some in the medicine cabinet. I just thought of that ! Did I do good Mike ?

White foam works fine if you use tru-oil as a finish, about 3 coats will do the trick.

Yes, Tap Plastics has retail stores in many communities. The acrylic should turn very well on your lathe.
